Foreign Holidays or UK Breaks: How Should I Spend My Money?

There is little more that Brits love than a holiday. Whether it’s the annual summer holiday to somewhere exotic or a long weekend city break, getting away can help us reset and go back to daily life rejuvenated.

However, research as part of the Travelodge Holiday Index revealed that 69% of Brits were to take their summer break in the UK in 2019. UK holidays have increased in popularity over recent years leaving many sun seekers wondering if they should hop in the car as opposed to a plane.

Today, there is a multitude of different ways to holiday that suit all manner of travel appetites. Continue reading our blog for some holiday inspiration to spend your money on.

Cruises

Undoubtedly one of the most popular ways to see the world is on a cruise. Multiple destinations and permanent ocean views, what’s not to love about taking to the seven seas? Cruises have always been championed by retirees as they are a laidback way of exploring the world in a luxurious fashion.

With many cruise operators offering travel from a huge variety of port destinations, you can stay nearer to home or head further afield. Some of the most popular cruise routes include:

  • The Caribbean
  • South Africa
  • The Norwegian fjords
  • The Mediterranean
  • Alaska

However, river cruises have also seen a rise in popularity, with grand ships meandering the likes of the Danube, Seine and Nile.

Motorhome holidays

If you want your own permanent holiday on wheels, investing in a motorhome is a fantastic option for a jaunt around the UK or Europe. There are a million and one different specifications of motorhome to choose from. Gone are the days of gas lights, no heating or glass window. Nowadays they can be a luxurious experience and come equipped with comfortable double beds, fully functioning lavatories and shower rooms, as well as ovens, televisions and every other creature comfort you can think of.

Whilst many believe motorhoming means anoraks and hiking poles, many hit the roads for weeks of sunshine in Spain, Portugal and the South of France. Alternatively, if taking to the slopes is your thing, there are campsites in Switzerland, Italy and France that have second to none facilities – including safe spaces to store your wet equipment after a day in the snow.

Long haul holidays

For many, there is nothing better than picking a far-flung destination and jetting off for a couple of weeks (or longer if you’re lucky enough) in paradise. Whether you want to explore or lounge on a private beach with a coconut in hand, locations such as Jamaica, Thailand, Australia and Bora Bora are on the bucket lists of many sun seekers.

Many travel companies offer all-inclusive packages for holidaymakers which wraps flights, transfers, accommodation, food, drink and hotel facilities into a neat bundle. However, as a holidaymaker, you are still free to do as you please, exiting the hotel to experience different towns, beaches and sights.

Holiday homes

Whether you dream of a cottage in the Hebrides or a chateau in Provence, putting your money into a holiday home can be a good idea. Purchasing a second home, albeit for respite purposes, poses not only an opportunity to sell for a profit in the future but to let as a source of income when you aren’t holidaying.

Whilst people who go down this avenue have to plan ahead to ensure their holiday home is free when they desire, there is sterling to be made, particularly in high season.
